The US Press Interviews Park’s Wife, Park Ri Hye
Park Ri Hye drew attention when she revealed a glimpse into her family life and the menu of her husband, Park Chan Ho. Chan Ho (36), of course, is a relief pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, a US Major League Baseball team. In an interview with the Philadelphia Daily News, a regional newspaper media, Ri Hye said that “his favorite menu is octopus, stir-fried and spicy, and doenjangguk (miso soup).”
With the World Series in full swing, area news media showed interest in Chan Ho’s private life because of his brilliant pitching. Since his debut in 1994, this is the first time he has stepped onto the mound in the World Series. Although his condition not at its best because he had the flue, he appeared in 3 games and recorded 1 save—2 and 1/3 inning scoreless inning. His pitching shone even brighter as the other Phillies pitchers were slumping.
A 3rd generation Korean-Japanese, Ri Hye revealed that she “prepare(s) a meal plan by adding Korean food and Western food on top of Japanese food.” She added, “(Chan Ho) is very traditional, and he really wants traditional home cooking, the kind of food his mother makes.” As for Ri, “I did not know much about Korean food because I was born and raised in Japan. As I learn more about it, I see that Korean food is very interesting” Ri did not miss the chance to put in a good world for Korean food: “Americans think that all Korean food is spicy, and it’s not. There are many healthy dishes.”
Ri Hye was introduced to Chan Ho by a mutual friend in 2004, married him in November, 2005 and has two daughters, Elynne (3), and Selynne (1). She majored in English Literature, and by training is a culinary expert in traditional French and Italian dishes. In February, she published a cookbook, titled “Ri Hye’s Kitchen.” With over 160 recipes in it, she revealed the “stir-fried octopus” recipe as the secret behind Chan Ho’s good pitching.
The cookbook also contains the story of Chan Ho’s eating habits—he can’t eat a meal without a Korean soup. After the couple had just wed, they were traveling in Japan with Ri’s family, and during a meal, Chan Ho asked to his wife in a low voice, “Ri Hye, isn’t there a soup?” She realized then that he must have a soup at each meal. Since then, she said she prepares a Korean soup and stew at each meal.
